Along with our charity partner Live Ocean Foundation, we’re celebrating an incredible milestone for one of Aotearoa’s most precious marine ecosystems. The New Zealand Government has passed the Hauraki Gulf Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Bill, a major step forward in safeguarding the health and future of our ocean.

Under the new law, two current marine reserves will be enlarged, ensuring marine life in those zones remains untouched. It also adds five seafloor protection areas to prevent damage to the ocean floor, along with 12 high-protection areas that limit fishing and other activities to give marine habitats a chance to recover.

Co-founded by Olympic sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, Live Ocean’s mission is to amplify ocean health through science, innovation, and storytelling, and this Bill represents the kind of impact that long-term dedication can achieve.

As Live Ocean noted, “Change doesn’t happen alone.” From local communities, advocates and supporters, this progress is the result of years of collaboration and passion for protecting our blue backyard.

We’re proud to play our part in that journey. For the past six years the Generate team (and more recently our members) braved icy waters across the country in our Mid-Winter Dip. This year we raised an amazing $75,000 for Live Ocean Foundation. Every dollar helps fund critical marine projects — from kelp forest restoration and managing invasive species, to understanding New Zealand’s oceanic manta populations.

Together, we’re helping ensure that Tīkapa Moana and the wider moana thrive for generations to come.

About the Live Ocean Foundation

Founded by Olympic sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, the Live Ocean Foundation focuses on blue carbon research, protecting at-risk marine species like the Antipodean albatross and Southern Right Whale, and creating detailed seafloor maps to aid conservation efforts. It also raises public awareness, engages communities, and advocates for strong marine conservation policies to ensure the health and sustainability of New Zealand's oceans for future generations.
